MBC Stompy On the Rise

Rising Waters, Blasto-Rebels, BeeGees Control, W/U Control, Blue Skies, etc. MBC has a diversity in viable decks we hadn't seen for a long time in Magic.

Sideboarding against all decks in nearly impossible, so you have to concentrate on a few decks you think are the greatest threats to you. Rising Waters, Blasto-Rebels, W/U Control and BeeGees Control are decks one should be prepared to face in most MBC tournaments. However, I would add one more to the list: Stompy.

I have heard many times that MBC Stompy does not have enough punch, that mono-color decks die a painful death in MBC (except for Rising Waters). Don't buy that. Not only is it the only MBC deck that can make a quite possible 4th turn kill, but Green Stompy also has answers to most decks around the net.

I played one at a local PTQ, and I did 3-1 (only loss to W/U Control and only because I fumbled with the Sideboard). During playtesting, it chewed up most decks. After some tuning and the PTQ, the deck looks more or less like this:

4 Skyshroud Ridgeback
4 Rushwood Dryad (Much better than Pygmy
                   Razorback in most cases)
4 Vintara Snapper
4 Silt Crawler
4 Blastoderm
4 Tangle Wire
2 Desert Twister
4 Land Grant
4 Seal of Strength
4 Invigorate
4 Wild Might
2 Rath´s Edge
16 Forest
Sideboard pretty much depends on what one is expecting to face. Here is an example:
3 Dawnstrider
2 Desert Twister
3 Rhox
4 Spidersilk Armor
3 Reverent Silence

Other choices might be:
Rushwood Legate
Vine Dryad
Woodripper
Distorting Lens
Squallmonger
Tiger Claws
Generally speaking, artifact removal shouldn´t worry Stompy much. If somebody plays a Chimeric Idol, hitting him with a Blastoderm is usually a good answer (and a winning one).

The deck usually starts very aggressive, and an early Tangle Wire may win the game. Longer duels can be won with Blastoderm or by removing any problem with Desert Twister.

So, if you're going to play MBC, remember Stompy as a good choice or a worthy opponent. If not, prepare to be beaten by the fastest MBC deck.
