Rogue Tendencies with Joe Tobin
Joe Tobin
aytakk2@yahoo.com.au
Since 1994 I have played Magic at tournament and casual levels. I have a tendency to experiement with underplayed cards and to shun net decks. It means a tournament is usually a case of crashing and burning or storming the ramparts to success. This is the life of the rogue player in a sea of net decked conformity...

Fans, Hunters and Magic

here are plenty of analogies that have been used to discribe players. The one most people are familiar with is Timmy Johnny, Spike...

"The Tournament I Never Went To"
12-10-2005
Why write an article about a tournament you never went to? I can't report how my deck behaved or where I finished. I didn't see a single match up so I can't comment on a single game.

"Regionals 2005 - The Payoff"
29-06-2005
In my previous article I talked about how I playtested online to prepare for Regionals this year. This is a story about the payoff at the end of the rainbow.

The Little Deck That Couldn't
25-03-2005
here I stood outside the Irish Club - cigarette in one hand, a tired look on my face. How could a deck go from potential format breaker to garbage in only 2 weeks? I looked back at how it all began.

It Swings!
10-02-2005
Common sense told me not to do it. The Spike in me said it was suicide. My rogue tendencies dared me to make it a reality. The product of a twisted mind I give you... IT SWINGS!

The Dead Man Walks
11-11-2004
States time has come and gone again. The year 2004 left plenty of possibilities for states. New cards were ripe for the breaking against the tried and tested decks of old. Would there be a big shift in the metagame? There was only one way to find out.

From a Magical Madman!
01-11-2004
Welcome one and all to my column 'Rogue Tendencies'! I though I should start off by telling a little about myself and how I think in regards to Magic. This may help the readers of future articles in this column understand why I come up with the ideas I do.

On a Razor's Edge - Adelaide Regionals 2006
12-07-2006
The Adelaide Regionals have come and gone. A top 8 have been decided who shall represent South Australia at the Australian Nationals...

Shot of Confidence
21-02-2006
Ravager Affinity was an insane deck in type 2 for a few reasons. First, the deck was pure synergy. Second, it had alternate win conditions...

Limited : Bombs vs Consistancy
07-12-2005
This article is something a little different for me. Rather than discussing a rogue deck I'm looking more at strategies that are employed in drafts. Whether I've articulated my arguments well remains to be seen - I thought this would be interesting to bring up and may get people thinking. Here it goes...

Bring Back Counterspell

Blue is described as being in the worst shape than it has been in years yet its still strong enough to dominate the top 8 of the biggest tournament in Australia. These decks aren't new - an archetype for Mono-Blue Control has been around for a while and decklists for Blue Urzatron have been circulating over the net for the last couple of months.

The Road to Regionals
21-06-2005
Its that time of year again - Regionals time! The finals series before the big grand daddy of Australian Magic. All eyes are on the road to Canberra and plans are being made in advance. Auto-qualifiers relax whilst the rest of us work at building something that can take us to the top 8 (Or top 4 depending where you are from) to avoid that process of shredding $20 notes known as 'The Grinders'.

Here is a man who would not take it anymore...
12-01-2005
Sunday morning, 19th December 2004. As I put on my Taxi Driver t-shirt that had the above quote printed on it, I felt its message was more than relevant for the days exercise. Robert De Niro face covered in blood, his fingers pointed at his temple like a gun. That crazed look in his eye. A man who had just taken out a house full of drug dealers and pimps. Definitely a man who would not take it anymore.

Barbs on the Ice
29-11-2004
The new concepts of Type 1 and Type 2 tournaments had only been around for a short time. This brought cheers from players such as myself who did not have a fortune to invest in older cards. It also brought jeers from many of the older players. I'll try to give an idea of what the metagame was like of that era.
