Stream of Consciousness with Michael Howell
Michael Howell
grmich@sa.chariot.net.au
I began playing Magic during the transition of Revised to 4th Edition. My play had always been casual, often with a multiplayer slant. I left the game around Visions as my player group slowly dissipated. Years later, someone whom I had been working with for a couple of years mentioned the game Magic, which he too hadn't played for years (who knows how that conversation came up). We decided to crack out some old decks, and I was hooked again. I purchased my first box of Darksteel, the current set, and haven't looked back. Soon after, my modular deck met a little deck called 'Tooth and Nail' and I knew the times had changed... And thus began my research. While I have never competed in a constructed event, I have a passion for various levels of the game. I study, I examine, and research theory and deck evolution, both for serious constructed, and kooky casual play. The articles I write may not have one ongoing focus, but as the column indicates, a Stream of Consciousness of whatever may be on my mind regarding this intricate game. Have fun!

SINGLE CARD STRATEGY CHALLENGE #3
29-08-2006
Welcome to the third installmentof the Single Card Strategy Challenge. Let's do a quick recap of the format for the article..

Ravnica/Peasant Deck Challenge Results
19-06-2006
I'll begin by saying there would have been some entries up for consideration if they had followed the rules… a couple of decks that were really good had between 6 and 9 uncommons, while the limit is 5. I imagine one of the Golgari decks in particular would have been very strong with a single card change.

MYOD: Make Your Own Draft!
16-03-2006
I enjoy draft formats because cards may have different values than in a constructed environment. They reward good card knowledge and choices as well as play skill.

Ravnica Block Constructed
05-03-2006
The release of Guildpact is upon us, and the first set of building blocks for Ravnica Block Constructed are in place. I'd like to present you with a few preliminary deck ideas that may be worth looking into for the season, or what you may expect to face.

GOING TO EXTREMES
28-12-2005
Before we begin, let's do a quick test. Have a look at the following cards. For each of the colours presented, which spell is most likely to make it into your deck?

ICE AGE PRE-CON FINALISTS
30-11-2005
After analysing the decks, a few of them stood out as highlights. Unfortunately, white went a little unrepresented. Of the decks that had white, “Wind Chill” by Danny Smith was the best.

Ravnica League
26-11-2005
My first pre-release was Champions of Kamigawa. Aside from one draft, pre-releases are the closest thing I get to serious play due to time constraints, despite my high enthusiasm for the game.

Two-Headed Giant - The New Format
31-08-2005
Two-Headed Giant is a format that has been around for a long time, and is a two-team, four player variant. The basic gist of the format is that one two player team plays another 2 player team, with each team having a shared life total; damage dealt to either player on the team would reduce their team life total.

SINGLE CARD STRATEGY CHALLENGE #2
02-07-2006
There are some anomalies in the sideboard (I'll get to those in a moment) but the core of the deck is solid. It can do the general Bloodbond March thing by sacrificing creatures to Spawning Pit, but can also do the same with Myr Servitor if you don't have Bloodbond March in play.

SINGLE CARD STRATEGY CHALLENGE #1
14-05-2006
Welcome to the first of what will be a regular feature here at MTGParadise. I was always a fan of Adrian Sullivan’s single card strategy column over at wizards.com, and was sad to see it go. I’ve always wanted to take up the mantle and run some articles here at paradise, and finally I’ve got the first underway!

Ravnica/Guildpact Peasant Deck Challenge
29-03-2006
It is once again time for another Peasant Deck Challenge to follow our last challenge, stand-alone Ravnica. Now we have Guildpact in the fold.

Ice Age Pre-Con Winners
01-02-2006
The time has come to announce the Pre-Constructed Ice Age deck winners. Our final four as listed last time were:

Ravnica Peasant Deck Challenge
20-12-2005
Peasant decks. I'm sure most of you know what they are. A peasant deck could be considered a super budget deck. It contains no rares. It may have a maximum of five uncommons. The rest is basic land and commons. That is basically the rules. Peasant Magic is all about facing these decks against each other.

Ice Age Pre-Con Competition
24-10-2005
The basic concept here is to design a pre-constructed deck using only cards from the Ice Age expansion. Before we begin, we have to ask ourselves a few questions:

Metagame: And the Casual Player
06-06-2005
Some of the casual players patrol the forums and read various articles on the web, not just the tournament players. Due to their exposure, I'm sure they have a grasp of what the term 'metagame' means, and how it is usually applied in context.
