Card Review: Overmaster

We have three staff card reviewers at the moment, Adrian Rimmer, Dan Gow and Danesh Jogia. These three put together a weekly card review, offering their own personal opinion on a particular Magic card. If you are interested in joining the review team or would like to suggest a card for the team to review then please email admin@mtgparadise.com.

I must admit I'm not a big fan of the two "next spell can't be countered" spells. I can't really even think of a sorcery I would ever particularly want to force through (although it is true I'm not thinking too hard here). I suppose in T1 there are good sorceries, but in T2, you have things like Call of the Herd, which are rarely tragic if they counter it because you'll be 2 for 1ing them.

Wildfire, maybe?

But wildfire is so bad...why ever cast that. It's not as though Obliterate can be countered anyway. Ah, lobotomy. There's one you don't want countered and is very devestating when resolves. Oh, and Haunting Echoes.

Hmm, maybe there is room for Overmaster somewhere.

Right now, I'd have to say that the best sorceries to force through with it are indeed Lobotomy & Haunting Echoes. So, if Haunting Echoes is your thang, I think you almost have to take Overmaster along for the ride. It will destroy 'Tog decks, which is good, but little do people know that it is also quite good against agro decks (Haunting Echoes I mean, not Overmaster).

Summarising, Overmaster is only as useful as any crucial sorceries in your deck. You'll know if you need it, so trade for it accordingly.

Limited: No, not really - unless you have found your deck to be 39 cards.... (It does let you draw a card). I can usually find some thing better though...

Constructed: Being a Sydneysider, I fell in love straight away with overmaster & insist for one simple reason - Sydney plays blue...

I'm not so sure how this measures up in other states but for me, this card will go straight into 4 sideboard slot for any counter matchup. But what is worth casting? Lobo? Mind Sludge? Global Ruin? Tsunami?

Take your pick, any case it's a nightmare for blue. It could even be worthwhile putting maindeck as it replaces itself.

Probable Value: $8 - it's playable, and thus worth more than a booster

Overmaster, I think this card has a lot of potential, fitting into Odyssey Block sligh decks. In extended this card could very easily be used, whether it be in Sligh or some crazy combo deck yet to be discovered, the raw power of the card should be fairly obvious. Either way this is a card that will be used in constructed sooner of later.
