To Net Deck or not to Net Deck

To Net Deck or Not to Net Deck. That is the Question.

My apologies to William Shakespeare.

You're on the net looking at up and coming events and you see that you have a PTQ (Pro Tour Qualifier) coming up. Then the age-old question hits you: what deck do I use? So you start looking at what decks are on the net and the decks you have built and then you look more on the net and then again at your decks and then one final time on the net. Then you finally decide; (a) stuff it and use a net deck or (b) you weigh up the pros and cons of the net decks vs your own. I say (b) because you don't know what you could create, it may be competitive, and then again it could be a total flop.

If you decided on (a) then find the deck you want on the net and build it. But if you decided (b), you are going to need to sit down and have a look at all the reasons for and against both and do quite a lot of play testing. So here are just a few reasons for and against both.

Reasons for using net decks:

  1. Most have had success in tournaments around the world.
  2. You don't have to worry about thinking up a deck that is very competitive in that format.
  3. Most net decks have a "how to play it" written about them.
  4. You can put it together in very little time and only play test it once or twice to get a feel for it.
  5. You know a lot of people will be playing net decks at most tournaments.
Reasons against using net decks:
  1. Do I like the decks and the way they play?
  2. Do I have the all the cards I need to make the deck on the net?
  3. If not, do I have the trades and cash to get the cards I want?
  4. Do I know how to play the deck properly, and how long do I have to play test?
  5. How well has this deck done in tournaments so far?
  6. Does it win all the time, or only half the time?
  7. Is there a deck that people play a lot that rips it apart?
Reasons for using your own decks:
  1. You made it and know how it works.
  2. You have all the cards for it, or you can borrow them from friends.
  3. You will find it easier to modify to suit the format.
  4. You can make you deck a metagame deck vs most of the net decks.
  5. It's your deck, your idea and if you win you won your way.
Reasons against using your own decks:
  1. Is it competitive, or just for fun?
  2. Do I have all the cards I need?
  3. Have I play tested it vs serious decks?
  4. How often does it win?
  5. Is there a popular net deck that rips it apart?

So there are some reasons for and against using net decks and using your own decks.

Hope it helps, and good luck in your next tournament.
