Net Decks

Hello people.

I wish to rant on about magic for a bit, in fact I wish to talk about one peculiar subject. Net decks, and the lame individuals who use them.

See, the way I see it is that Magic was firstly made for fun. It should be played for fun as far as I am concerned! The thing that seems to have changed, is the fact that WOTC now are offering prize money for tournaments - lots of money - and all the greedy types of persons who understandably want to win are turning to net decks to aid them.

The problems with this:

1) Originality. These people are not original, the only thing they bring to the game is their foul stench!

2) Yawn......mirror match ups! Two deck's basically the same, fighting one another. Yawn! it becomes a game of luck only! Yawn!

3) It halves the game...... Sure it does, half the game is building a deck!

4) Its a form of theft (well kinda). The person who came up with the deck in the first place I have respect for!

5) Honour! Where are these people's honour? I personally feel that to use a deck that I didn't come up with an insult to my creativity!

6) The meta game. People start building decks specifically to do well against certain deck types. Fair enough, just be original with it!

7) *(Boy this annoys the hell out of me!)* The winner is no longer the best deck builder, there is a massive proportion of luck involved! Now I see magic as a strategy game not a luck game!

8) Costs. Certain cards become more sort after if 80% of people in tournaments use them in their decks! (I wish that all cards were as common as any other card, and that only its usefulness would add to its value)

If you can't go to a tournament with a deck you built/designed, then stay at home and play a game of 'snap'. The drive to win money is fair enough, just use your own head, you might even come up with something good! I understand that decks using similar strategies, might play and look similar, but if that pile of cards held in your grasp is your own, the feeling of pride if you win will be worth it!

I hope you have spotted the message hidden in this article, Be rouge [and when being red isn't enough, be rogue :-) Ed], be different, surprise your opponents, be original. If you are then you will find you will add to the game, rather than just playing it!

Now feel free to e-mail me if you have a comment, or better an insult. adam.tew@hants.gov.uk

PS respect due for original players like "Steve Tate", and "Kahana Chin" for writing some class articles.
