![]() Grand Prix Brisbane - Hometown Heroes
Australia has been one of the great hosts for Magic's premier events.
After a successful Grand Prix and Invitational in Sydney last year, the
Magic scene has now shifted gear towards the city of Brisbane. Brisbane,
already a city rich in culture and sport, now becomes host for the
biggest Magic event of its time on October 20th.
Many players from around the country, as well as small contingent of
international players from New Zealand, Singapore, Japan and maybe the
United States, will show up for this event. However many forget
the people of Brisbane itself. Brisbane has given birth to a group of
solid Magic players. After a solid performance in this year's Australian
Nationals, the 'Brisbane Boys', as we are often referred to, are more than
up to the challenge of keeping the Grand Prix champion title within the
city itself. Below is a sneak preview of the Brisbane's finest that you will
meet when you come over:
WILL COPEMAN
A player who needs no introduction is none other than Brisbane's
top-ranked player. As a finalist in last year's GP in Sydney, Will has
loads of Magic experience under his belt and can pull it off once again.
Always a consistent performer but has yet to thrive in the limited
scene.
GREG ROMANS
Brisbane's own limited man. Well known for his limited skills and fair
amount of trash talking, Greg seeks another round of good performance
after a disappointing finish in the GP and Nationals. The sealed portion
of the Grand Prix should be his strong point and with 3 byes in his
hand, Greg should be a lock for day 2.
CHRIS KWAN
Queensland's 2000 State Champion. Chris also finished 12th in GP Sydney
and had a whopping 6-0 start in the Rochester portion of 2001 Australian
Nationals. This shows how versatile this young (and married) man's
ability is, and his dominance in any format. Always joked about being Mr.
Ninth place, Chris may have put away all doubts of late with good
finishes in both Trials and PTQ's.
WEI REN KHOO
Australian National Team and top 8 in GP Kuala Lumpur. With loads of
playing experience, Wei Ren could be considered the best yet in
Queensland in terms of playing skill. However, consistency is much to
be desired as Wei Ren is currently on a success drought. However, a new
set in Odyssey should help send in a wake up call to him to up his
performance to that which he has shown during the beginning of the year.
JASON CHELLEW
Jason a.k.a. Mango has been one of the latest additions to Brisbane's
elite group. Originally from Townsville, Mango has enjoyed much success
in Brisbane at the expense of some of the other Brisbane top players.
After 3 successive top 8's for GP Trials (which he won once and was a finalist
in another), Mango feels limited is his best format and is confident to
perform well in the upcoming GP. However Odyssey is a whole new set and
may prove a tough challenge for the veteran.
And last but not least...
PANG MING WEE
Like all my comrades above, sealed has always been my strongest format.
I realise that the element of luck plays a major role here. However, as
Odyssey is a relatively new set, I could say the chances are very even.
Comes down to heaps of practice and getting used to it. I finished within
one win of my first GP top 8 in GP Singapore last year as well as one
win away from a Nationals top 8. I do not look to make it three times in
a row. Like Greg, I have 3 byes and I will count on every one of
them to propel me to a good performance.
SEE YOU IN OCTOBER!
